It was no surprise that Imagine Dragons sold out the Sound Academy on February 27th on their first headlining tour. It was more entertaining than expected for their first big tour across North America. There wasn’t any room to breath in the crowd, and it didn’t fail to leave anyone disappointed upon leaving.
The opening acts were full of energy, with Nico Vega, from Los Angeles, California first taking the stage. Fun fact: did you know that the lead singer of Nico Vega is married to the lead singer of Imagine Dragons, or that they have a child together? It’s kind of interesting to learn, right? Well, anyways. They were full of energy nonetheless, and they had so much fun on stage, constantly climbing all over the instruments and drums they had set up. Aja Volkman-Reynolds has such a powerful voice that is strikingly similar to Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, but it has such a mesmerizing element to it.
The following act was Atlas Genius, from Adelaide, South Australia. This was their first performance in Toronto, and they are already coming back on June 23rd at the Opera House! They’re such a fun band to watch, with the lead singer Keith Jeffery’s running back and forth on stage, eventually jumping down and landing on the barricade in front of the crowd! Their final song, Trojans, is the one that got the entire crowd singing with them. Keep an eye out for this band; they’re going to make their way to the top pretty quickly.
Lastly, the most unforgettable performance of the entire night is of course the headliner, Imagine Dragons, from Las Vegas, Nevada. The light show on it’s own was entertaining, but the opening performance was incredible – with the whole band playing percussion instruments leading into their first song, Round and Round. Imagine Dragons continued with their fast-paced happy songs including Tiptoe and their current single, Radioactive. Immediately following, they slowed things down with Thirty Lives – with only Dan Reynolds and guitarist Wayne Sermon performing. When they played Demons, the crowd went wild, singing along with Reynolds. It was the final two songs that everyone was excited for. On Top Of The World was what got the excitement and happy environment right back on track, with even the fans in the seats upstairs standing and singing along with every note while the crowd downstairs was tossing balloons among each other. It wasn’t surprising that their final song was It’s Time – the song that got the band their fame. Every time they played the chorus, the audience was jumping up and down with their hands in the air singing to every note. Once their performance was over, the band got a standing ovation, and the crowd chanted for an encore, which Imagine Dragons delivered by playing Nothing Left To Say.
The night was a success, and the fans were more than excited to see Imagine Dragons in concert. Reynolds is a very humble man, acknowledging that the band wouldn’t be anywhere without the fans, and informing them that Imagine Dragons was set to return in the summer. This is a band that will find more than success with their down-to-earth attitude, honesty, and unbelievable passion for what they do. They aren’t slowing down any time soon, guaranteed.
