1) Where did the name, Mookie & The Loyalists, come from?
Being the primary songwriter (Mookie) for the bands EP (released last October), it was originally just me and a handful of songs for an EP I wanted to record. I then enlisted the band to step in on instrumentation, and the name The Loyalists came up. The term was originally used to describe Americans who supported the British Crown over US Independence. We're Canadian and are fond of British music, so it stuck.
2) How long has the band been together?
Me, Lewis and Sean have been the core of the band for a year, while the revamped lineup with Jim on bass, and Jessy on guitar has been for approximately four months.
3) What have been some of your biggest accomplishments so far?
Sharing the stage with big name artists. And playing to crowds across Ontario and Quebec that are mainly new fans.
4) What is your favourite song to perform live, and why?
For me, its one of our new songs called "Bad Man". We have yet to record it, and I always like to see the reaction to the song from somebody who only knows songs off the EP. Its a slight change in sound, but so far its been well received.
5) How would you describe your fans?
Eclectic. We have fans from all different age groups, lots of students and young professionals, lovers of old and new rock n roll and theyre usually quite attractive.
6) What are your thoughts on the Toronto Music Scene, both good and bad?
We're lucky getting to be from here. A lot of the bands in the city have moved here from elsewhere, and while theyre hometown heroes back in New Brunswick, its a different story here. We dont get phased by being little fish in a big pond anymore.
7) What is your favourite venue to play in Toronto?
Probably the Opera house for the terrific acoustics, or the Mod Club for the trippy lights.
8) What are some of your favourite Toronto bands out right now?
Zeus, Dinosaur Bones, The Treasures, Modern Superstitions
9) What has been the craziest fan moment to date?
A group of girls saw us in London one night, and decided to make the trip to Guelph the next day for another show.
10) For people seeing Mookie & The Loyalists for the first time at Revival on August 25th, what can they expect?
Upbeat tunes, top notch musicianship, dancing, shouting, new songs, and a good ol' time.
