LiveMusicTO chats with Stephanie Bosch. 1) For those who want to get to know Stephanie Bosch a bit more, how would you describe it?
I’m sure you get this a lot as a response, but the music we play as a band is all over the place. It’s really hard to box it into a specific genre or style, which works as a positive for the most part. People seems to enjoy the songs we play because they are all over the map style wise. What I can say, is it’s energetic alt rock with some punk attitude. Plus, we’re not too scared to take it down a notch ;) 2) How long have you been performing?
Me myself, well I’ve been performing since I was a kid.. but I don’t know how many cool points I get for being a band geek. I’ve been playing original music for about 3 years straight now. Now, when it comes to the boys and I, we’ve only been playing together since October 2010. They’re the coolest boyfriends I could ask for ;) 3) What have been some of your biggest accomplishments so far?
Honestly, a major one would be actually making the move here to Toronto. As I know understand, it takes a lot to move away from your friends and family.. I was the biggest baby ever about moving until a couple of months ago. So I feel way better about living here. Other than that, I’d have to say some of the bigger shows I’ve been fortunate enough to play like the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2009 Edmonton Folk Festival.. it’s not every day you actually get to live your dream of being a rock star. Or Batman. 4) What is your favourite song to perform live, and why?See, that always changes ha. I have a couple that stand out as my favourites… but I’d say hands down, “Favourite Worst Enemy” off my last CD “Departures”… It’s a song I get really into and I get to yell a lot. Other than that, there’s nothing like performing a new song. 5) How would you describe your fans?
Again, all over the place. We’ve had hardcore thrasher kids say they were stoked on our set, little kids who ask me to play a Miley Cyrus song, and guys and girls of all types ask where we came from. Generally, really awesome people. 6) What are you most looking forward to in 2011?Shows, shows, shows. All over Toronto and hopefully parts of Ontario. Now that we’ve got the band figured out, it’s kind of like we’ve all been given awesome sports cars, and all we want to do is drive them. 7) What is your favourite venue to play in Toronto?
Well, I am new to Toronto but I have played my fair share of venues. Out of the 8 or 9 that I’ve played so far since September, I’d have to say the Central was a really cool venue. It had great vibes and the people working there are more than kind. I’m looking forward to playing the El Mocambo and of course, the Drake. 8) Where is your favourite spot in the city to hangout?
The Beaver, on Queen St by the Gladstone Hotel. It’s a cute little hangout that serves amazing food and of course, alcohol. My favourite! 9) What has been the craziest fan moment to date?
Craziest fan moment?! I have nothing really hard core ha, but I do remember this one time I was submitting to festivals when I was a solo act.. and one of the promoters daughters from a festival heard her mom play my cd, and went out of her way to let me know she thought it was great. Getting fan emails from people I have never met, it just really makes me think that what I do actually matters. 10) For people seeing you for the first time at LiveMusicTO's presentation of Whosarmy’s CD Release, what can they expect? A lot of different sounding tunes.. and I can’t promise all our clothes will stay on. Kidding.

LiveMusicTO chats with Lauren Malyon.1) For those who want to get to know you a bit more, how would you describe your music?I make pop music, with sweet melodic vocals and synth dancy bass lines. I sound a bit like Goldfrapp, Metric, and Lights. 2) How long have you been performing? I started performing classical violin and piano as early as age 3, but I’ve been performing my own pop songs since I was about 16. 3) What have been some of your biggest accomplishments so far? I got my A.R.C.T. in piano performance (the highest exam you can do) when I was 14 years old. Soon after that I decided to pursue pop music more seriously, and at 16 years old I had the opportunity to open for Neverending White Lights (w/ Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, and Scott Anderson of Finger Eleven) at the Mod Club. It was a surreal experience that confirmed for me that I want to do music forever. In May 2009, I released my EP “At My Window”. It was the summation of years of songwriting and hard work, and I was so proud to finally have it recorded. I held a nice big CD Release at an old Town Hall, and I performed with a 10 piece band, including string players, the whole deal…it was a magical night. 4) What is your favourite song to perform live, and why? My favourite song to perform…ooh that’s a tough question! I love a new version of “If You Fall” that I’ve been working on…it’s off of my first EP “At My Window”, and since playing it live so many times, it’s sort of morphed into this slow, ambient, intense, M83 type song that I can pour my heart into. I also LOVE my new cover of T Rex “20th Century Boy”! It has such an incredible riff, and I get to shake the tambourine and dance around a bit, and really let loose with some playful vocals…it’s a ton of fun. 5) How would you describe your fans? My fans love pop music but don’t necessarily want to turn their brains off and act like the cast of Jersey Shore when they go out…but come to think of it, that could be fun once in awhile! (laughs…) 6) What are you most looking forward to in 2011? So much! I have a lot of new songs in development that I feel really represent where I’m at right now, so I will be releasing new recordings in the near future. Also looking forward to sharing stages with some of the amazing local artists I’ve come to know over the last year. 7) What is your favourite venue to play in Toronto? The Drake, of course! The Supermarket would be a close second. 8) Where is your favourite spot in the city to hangout? Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time on Baldwin Street…it’s a little gem with some great eats! 9) What has been the craziest fan moment to date? I have one really supportive fan from Japan. He has written me on Myspace regularly for years. His name is Moon and he’s very sweet. He is a very unique character. 10) For people seeing you for the first time at LiveMusicTO's presentation of Whosarmy’s CD Release, what can they expect? They can expect to see a girl with big crazy blonde hair and combat boots, balancing a keytar, electric violin and tambourine, backed by a kick-ass band, singing songs that will make you feel like everything will be alright.
LiveMusicTO chats with Mercedes Arn-Horn of Courage My Love.1) Where did the name “Courage My Love” come from?M: "The line actually came from a movie made in the 1930's called 'Things to Come', which was one of the first zombie-psi-fi movies ever. The full quote is 'Have courage, my love... and may their little hearts have courage too.' We wanted a band name that had a positive message and could fit any genre of music, and we though the quote sounded cool!" 2) How long have you been together as a band? M: "Courage My Love started with my twin sister Phoenix and I. We started about 3 years ago, writing and jamming together and playing locally and on the east coast. David is the newest addition, having joined September '09." 3) What have been some of your biggest accomplishments so far?M: "I'd say some of the stuff I am most proud of is getting our first music video airing on heavy rotation on MuchMusic; being the band with the youngest members to make it in to the finals of IndieWeek 2010; playing several shows during Canadian Music Week; and with the help of the internet gaining thousands of fans internationally. I also love having the opportunity to work with out amazing producer (Chris Perry) and stellar manager (Nicole Hughes)." 4) What is your favourite song to perform live, and why? M: "I really don't have a favourite song of ours. My songs are like my children. I can't pick a favorite. A lot of our new ones are really fun to play live, and I love when the crowd sings along with them." 5) How would you describe your fans?M: "We honestly have the best fans in the world. They are all really enthusiastic and crazy and they all have just a big a passion for our music as we do. They are loyal and encouraging! They inspire me to keep playing and writing music." 6) What are you most looking forward to in 2011?M: "We're releasing our first official EP; we're filming and releasing our second music video; we're planning on touring and playing festivals all across Ontario; and we're going to go to waterparks in our off-time. I really don't know what else is gonna happen, but I'm looking forward to seeing where the band goes in the next year. BRING IT ON!" 7) What is your favourite venue to play in Toronto?M: "We've played lots of Toronto venues, big and small. My top three would have to be Cherry Cola's, The El Mocambo and the Tattoo Rock Parlour." 8) Where is your favourite spot in the city to hangout as a band? M: "I love to chill at Cherry Cola's. Inside it looks like a vampire nightclub and Care Failure and Metal Mel always play the best tunes! I also like to grab my ginger teas at the Java Hut before a show and sushi at Simon Sushi. Kensington Market is also a cool place to find neat little treasures that no one else has." 9) What has been the craziest fan moment to date?M: "All our fans are crazy and awesome! One time we called up one of our fans in England and she freaked out! It was really moving and exciting. I tried to play it cool, but i was THIS close to tears! Another fan from Cambridge got a CML sleeve tattooed on his arm, which I thought was pretty neat. We also found a six year old covering one of our songs on youtube. I definitely cried when I saw that!" 10) For people seeing Courage My Love for the first time at LiveMusicTO's showcase on April 21st with Cut Throat Kids & Theset, what can they expect?M: "We're really stoked that LiveMusicTO asked us to play, and we're psyched to see all the other bands on the bill perform as well. As for our live show, onstage is where we get to be crazy and interact with our fans. It's always energetic and fun. But I guess you'll just have to come and see us for yourselves, now won't you?."
