Tonight Tonight, featured artist on livemusicTO during the month of March (read interview HERE), recently held their CD Release show in Burlington, ON at 24/7. I didn't arrive until TT started playing, and the venue was pretty full - a really good turnout - and there was excitement in the air as the band took the stage. Tonight Tonight is as good live as they are on disc - if not better - and a real thrill to watch. They had the crowd jumping around, hands in the air, and at certain points singing along. It was amazing.

If you haven't already go grab a FREE copy of Tonight Tonight's song "I Know You Know" on our downloads page HERE, and while you're there head over and purchase the full length - you won't be dissappointed!

Sun & The Stars - Victory, Sweet Victory!
livemusicTO chats with Andrew Whiting of Ontario pop punk band Victory, Sweet Victory!

lmTO:
What inspired the name Victory, Sweet Victory?

“Victory, Sweet Victory!” was a different kind of approach personally to picking a name. We had just had a big change in our band, we had left our vocalist and we were left with the pieces. We wanted to title ourselves something that would really stand true to what we went through and how we overcame it. We felt nothing suited it better than “Victory, Sweet Victory!”

lmTO: Coming together from former metal bands (like Better Lies Beneath,Liferuiner and the Oxford Street Montage), I find it really interesting to hear this new sound in VSV's tunes. How has the genre change treated everyone in the band thus far?
Well it wasn't too unfamiliar of a change, all five of us as kids grew up playing pop-punk in bands once we approached our teen angst phase's we found refuge in the metal genre for a long time. As we grew up, matured as people and musicians, we started writting music like you hear today.

lmTO: There seems to be an underlying message in your lyrics, whatmessage does the band try to communicate to fans?
The songs we find are drawn from inspiration of everyday life. Sometimes written about something so small, but always exploding with creativity. I don't think we always send one message, we believe songs can very with every feeling. Love, Happiness, Loss, and Recovery are very strongly communicated with our songs.

lmTO: If there is one band in the world you would love to share the stage
with, who would it be and why?
I think It would be Blink-182, We all grew up on Blink and the bands that they have been in and still to this day. We love everything they do."

lmTO: What has been a highlight of Victoy, Sweet Victory's career so far?
Favourite moments or crazy fan experiences?
I think as of right now our favorite moment was playing a showcase for Mark Spicoluk from Disband and Underground Operations. He came up after our set, had a little meeting, he said we had it and that we were a very tight band.

lmTO: What is your favourite venue in Toronto to play?

We have only played a couple venues in Toronto so far but I think the venue we would love to play would have to be the Kool Haus. We have all seen so many amazing bands there and it would be an Honor to play that stage.

lmTO: What can fans expect from Victory, Sweet Victory! in the near future?
All of our fans can expect us to be going on our first of many tours by the fall. Following the release of our debut EP, which we are and will be working very hard to complete. With an ever growing fanbase and reputation of an entertaining and tight live show, there may be a few suprises to come from us in the not too distant future ;)

Currently based in Vancouver is one of the country's most exciting up and coming hip hop duos, OKAY CITY, consisting of Ray Black and Bill Maka. This week they're en route to Toronto for a much-anticipated show at The Drake Underground on Friday (here). livemusicTO wanted to take the opportunity to catch up with one of the members, Ray Black - check it out:

lmTO:
When did you guys first meet and decide to start working together?

Okay City met up in London Ontario around 2005, but didn't official set the stage as the duo until 2007. We were doing shows supporting one another on stage and had realized we had such great chemistry on stage we deicide to combine our talents into one.

lmTO: Where did the name Okay City come from?
The name Okay City originated from both our hometowns, Ray Black From Oakville Ont. Bill Maka From Kitchener Ont. and London is also known as the Forest City where Okay City was founded.

lmTO: We know from reading your bio that your music careers started in Ontario but more recently moved to BC, what made you move and has it been beneficial for your music?
We've both always wanted to come out to the west coast. Bill moved to Vancouver about 6 or 7 months before me and finally convinced me to pack up my bags. No regrets. Definitely has been beneficial. The scenery and entire vibe of the city is very inspiring.

lmTO: Where do you get inspiration for lyrics and what is the message you want Okay City to communicate?
We inspire eachother and always pushing one another to grow as artists. Being outside or being in the studio really helps.. it's all about being in the right comfortable environment. There's not a specific message that we put out. We just make music we enjoy and that people can relate to. Touching on different subject matters.. fear.. pain.. everyday struggle..love.. and just feeling good. We speak alot from experience.

lmTO: From your experience, how does the hip hop audience differ from East to West?
It's a prety vast difference. Alot of cats embrace it out here. Not to say that they don't out east.. but the scene is really small. Everyone knows eachother and there are alot of talented artists. The common stereotype of the west coast is that everyone is really chilled out, which is true, but when it comes to a hip hop show... these peeps know how to wild out!

lmTO: Any insights you’d like to share with our readers about the state of the hip hop genre in Canada?
There's soo many talented hip hop artists' in this country. On many levels, some have a following, some don't. but there's only so much you can do here. If at least 3 of our provinces each had the population of our entire country.. then the scene in any genre would be incredibly different. There's just not enough people in Canada but theres still alot of opportunity here..especially when it comes to funding. Its a blessing.

lmTO: Okay City has shared stages with well known artists like Swollen Members and Hilltop Hoods, what are some of the most memorable moments while performing alongside those artists?
That's a tough one.. whenever we step on the stage..no matter if we are opening for a well known name or headlining a show... theres always memorable moments...and plenty of tour stories. If i have to pick one... from the tour with Hilltop Hoods.. we played a date in Calgary.. our first time in that city... a sold out crowd of 600 and no one knew who or what Okay City was... and by the 2nd song of our set.. we had every single person chantin our name.. and jumpin off their feet..it was an incredible feeling!

lmTO: What’s coming next for Okay City?
We are just about to do a couple shows back in Ontario.. first time in a year... so we are really looking forward to that. I'm releasing a Ray Black free online mixtape this spring. Bill Maka is working on his solo album which will be out this year. As well we are always workin on new material.. keep checkin our sites for downloads:

This is the second time I've seen Whale Tooth, and I have their ep on steady rotation. They put on an incredible live show, getting the room dancing along. Their sets always feel too short, but leave the crowd sweaty & satisfied. I definitely recommend checking them out, if you haven't already.

For a Tuesday night, The Opera House was louder than ever. It was my first time seeing The Rocket Summer live and I was blown away by how the crowd was so compassionate from the beginning to end. Bryce Avary compiles a very unique live performance ranging from playing a song in the middle of the crowd to performing each instrument on a loop station.

At the end of the night I was very impressed with both bands; The Rocket Summer, Hot Chelle Rae and went home well entertained once again from the great sound of The Opera House in Toronto, ON
